The OLQE is a tough exam. It is a LAW exam. Candidates must be prepared for an intense experience. They must learn Hong Kong law, and practise key skills, in a relatively short time.
This is why we also label this course The Early Registration Package.
The examination comprises 6 ‘Heads’ as follows:
Head I (Conveyancing);
Head II (Civil and Criminal Procedure);
Head III (Commercial and Company Law);
Head IV (Accounts and Professional Conduct);
Head V (Principles of Common Law) *
Head VI (Hong Kong Constitutional Law).

The Full Course (aka The Early Registration package) is primarily for non-common lawyers, and common lawyers who must sit 4 or 5 Heads of the OLQE, but all candidates may choose the full course if they wish.

REMARKS
The 3 stages
(1) Familiarisation, Application and Revision (“FAR”) are the keywords.
(2) Use the times for planning study periods.
(3) The materials emphasise different skills.
(4) You will be supported throughout the 3 stages.
Nature of the OLQE
(5) The OLQE is a LAW exam. You cannot pass it if you do not include law in your answers. Though the examinations for Heads I, II, III, IV and VI are “open book”, you must learn the law beforethe exams because you will not have time to look up anything in the exam. Besides, if you don’t know the law, you won’t know what to look up.
For these reasons, you must allocate a great deal of time to studying the law in the BPs.
Stage 1
Big syllabuses
(6) The syllabuses are very large. You will need time to absorb what is in the BPs. 4 months is a good measure, but you may complete your reading in less than that time or you may need more time. The process of learning varies from one person to another. There is no ‘1-size fits all’.
Time is computed from the time you register. You will have more time if you register early. There is no formal start date. Your study begins as soon as your registration is complete. Paul Kent provides learning support from the moment you register for the 2026 course, right up to the eve of the exams.

Contents of the BPs
(7) (a) We provide you with a Law Exam Key Skills paper and related audios. Knowing and understanding the law is not enough. You must use key skills to work out what the exam questions are about, apply the law to deal with the issues raised by the questions, and know how to structure your answers in the most efficient way.
We strongly advise everyone to read the Law Exam Key Skills Paper and, if possible, to listen to the audios, preferably with the Paper in front of you.
(b) The BPs in each of the 5 written Heads set out the law and includes examples of the kinds of problems you will face in the examinations. The BPs have headings which correspond to items in the syllabus. Important Topics are included under each Heading. You will spend much of your time learning the laws set out in these Topics. The wording of a Topic typically corresponds to an issue (or issues) tested in previous examinations and/or which might be tested in the upcoming exam. If you get a question on a particular Topic, you may use the law set out in that Topic as part of your answer to the question set.
(8) As in all law programmes, candidates must spend a great deal of time studying by themselves (or in groups), at times that suit them. This is inevitable.
But this does not mean that you are alone during these study periods. We provide support to you throughout your studies.
Learning support
You may contact Paul Kent directly by email at any time. Paul will always try to respond to your questions within 24 hours. Where you send a batch of questions, we may arrange a 1 on 1 live online session as the most efficient way of responding to them.
During Stage 1, we will provide a minimum of 8 x 1 hour of live, online, classes, in which we will practise the law exam key skills in a number of “must know” Q&As. The classes will be scheduled to last for 1 hour but may extend beyond that time. All sessions are from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm Hong Kong time.
Attendance is not compulsory. We make audio recordings of all our live sessions. You may listen to them in your own time, online or on your phone, ipad or table.
Stage 2
Law Exam Key Skills
(9) Knowing the law is never enough to pass a law examination in a common law system. You must be able to analyse facts and law, and apply law to respond appropriately to the problems you get in the examinations.
(10) In Stage 2, there will be 14 x 1 hour live online sessions in each of the 5 Heads. They will commence in the first week of June, 2026 to allow the full 3 months we have allocated for completing Stage 2. Ideally, you should have completed Stage 1 by then, but that is not a requirement.
(11) During Stage 2, we work on full test papers so you practise how to use the skills to answer all of the questions you are required to do in the exam itself, and how to manage time in the exam.
Problem analysis
(12) The live online classes focus on analysing examination questions on particular Topics.
Most of these questions are taken from past Test Papers, but some have been prepared at Paul Kent Legal Training.
Working on solving problems is at the heart of our learning programme.
While the shared files contain suggested solutions as a helpful way of learning how to structure your answers in the examinations, they are for learning purposes only and should not be treated as if they were the answers to questions in the upcoming exams.

You will not pass if all you do is regurgitate model answers, however good they may be.
Stage 3
Getting ready to run
(13) In Stage 3, you are sharpening your knowledge and skills as you move closer to the start of the examinations. We liken Stage 3 to the 100 metre runner who is “getting ready to run” in a major race.
(14) In Stage 3, there are 6 x 1 hour live online sessions in each of the 5 Heads They will commence in early September to enable you to complete the 6 weeks set aside for this Stage.
(15) During this Stage, we will continue to look at whole Test Papers, and you will sharpen your time-management skills. We will also examine any recent cases and other recent developments that might come up in the examination.
Looking forward to the exam
(16) We complete the live online classes in this Stage with some suggestions about the forthcoming examination, and provide comments on the Mock Examinations we create in each Head to help you improve your performance in the examinations.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
1. Casebooks
Casebooks consist of a series of case notes on Topics in the BPs. Cases are a crucial part of learning in a common law system in which judicial decisions are a separate source of law. Reading cases (or case notes) will help you to learn the law exam skills, and give you useful examples of how to structure your answer to a problem question.
We advise candidates to read cases as a way of improving knowledge and understanding, and for developing/reviewing common law reasoning skills.
2. Updates
It is inherent in the common law that there may be new cases or other developments which may affect materials crafted at a particular time. For this reason, we provide updates. Specifically, we provide:
(i) Notes on recent cases;
(ii) Summaries of new or amending legislation; and, where appropriate,
(iii) Stand-alone audios with shared files.
In each case, we explain how this new development changes or develops the existing law, or merely illustrates a new application of an established principle.
3. Mock Examinations
We compose tailor-made Mock Examinations in each Head, provide answers to all the questions set, and give individual feedback on submissions.
FEES
There is a base fee for each Head of the OLQE. Discounted fees are offered for an individual who registers for more than 1 Head, or for 2 or more persons who each register for 2 or more Heads (i.e.
